that was tough

yesterday it hit me how strange it is have a plastic event while studying neuroscience. so circular.

another something to think about: i saw dr baker. if you’re interested in helping in the anatomy department as a peer-assistant next year, contact him. my guess is that these positions will go fast.

please let jane know how much you appreciate her and wish her well on her next pursuit. her support to our class and the college will be greatly missed.

congratulations to us, and here’s to some earned relaxation…

I don't get what you're saying Garrett! Can you clarify?

Two things:
-radiology is a mess: there is a lot of confusion surrounding the required reading material. i wrote the professor to encourage a reading list, but he refused. now, he's trying to back pedal with announcements during class. I think a uniform email needs to be sent out regarding the applicable reading requirements for the upcoming exam.
-professors need to be instructed to repeat what comments are said by students in the audience. because the comment is being directed toward them and because they are likely aware of what might be said its much easier for them to hear the comment. but for the class as a whole it is nearly impossible. picture Dx of Disease class when all the AP students respond to a question with a indistinguishable dull roar. professors should be instructed to repeat responses and answers given by the group - i can't tell what's been said.

the seats and desk situation in saklad is a really big issue. the seats are so old and worn that it is actually PAINFUL to sit in them for even an hour! and the fact that our university cannot even provide us with proper desks to take notes on, or take tests on, etc not only makes the university look bad but makes its students look like complete fools during classes!

on another note, the lecture hall is just simply poorly designed with only two aisles and an extremely long row for the front half of the lecture hall paired with narrow space between rows so its difficult to walk through the row. isn't that a safety hazard?

the issue of the saklad should really be given a lot of time during your meeting with the dean since we will be sitting in those seats till may! and i'd be interested to hear what the dean has to say (i.e. give us an update after the meeting).

maybe they can implement usage of the clickers we've paid for (again) instead of using scantrons and dealing with the confusion when getting them at the beginning of CR2 or DOD; and then again when handing them in after class. How about they implement that technology they are so proud of!!

i agree with lyle - lecturers should repeat questions and answers so the entire class can hear it.

Whoever schedule our classes should be more considerate to the commuters and eliminate big huge gaps as much as possible. How about instead of having classes at 8:00 and then some group have conference, we can have conference first and then big classes at a later time. For example, the B and C groups have to wait 3 hours while A group has their microbio conference. Instead, we can have A group conference at 8:00 and then Diversity or whatever class in Saklad together at a later, more reasonable time (11 instead of 8)?

Last year majority of the B groupers did not attend the 8:00 classes on Thursdays and Fridays because of the 4-hour gap before our GDS lab at 2:00pm. And they blamed us for the low attendance? If they had half a brain to put the A group GDS lab at 8:00 and lectures around 10:30 and B group at 2:00, lots more students would've showed up for lectures!

I too would like a coherent email detailing exactly what went on after each of these meetings with the deans/faculty.

It would be nice to actually be informed this year! We cannot exactly read minds, you know.

Is anyone else finding it extremely frustrating that every time a question is asked the AP students answer in a chorus that the rest of us have no way of understanding? And then the professor does not repeat the answer? I sometimes wonder if the faculty think they're teaching a class of already dentists instead of a class of people who would like to be dentists!

i agree with lyle, radio is a mess. that guy can't teach. he's not clear, can't explain, jumps around, and he expects us to memorize the whole vital book w/o telling us whats important or not.

another thing, it feels like the professors are teaching to the AP students only. some of the questions they pose to us are unfair; we have no way of knowing what the hell they are talking about. also, they need to explain new concepts or terms that we have never been exposed to rather then thinking that we have been exposed to them already. we (non AP) are the majority, so stop making the lectures so damn AP-centric.

and this year, can we be informed of the decisions that are made or discussed during these meetings with the deans?! why is it that our opinions are never asked?! i feel so left in the dark and wish that the reps would represent our voice by asking us how we feel instead of MAKING DECISIONS FOR US. and whats the point of having an election if there are only one candidates per position.

To the comment about "whats the point of having an election if theres only one person per position".....why aren't you running? What kind of comment was that exactly? what is the student government supposed to do to resolve the issue of not enough people interested in actually trying to get involved and make a difference?

also, our opinions were asked Plenty last year. upper admin (the deans) do lots of stuff without giving the student gov any heads up whatsoever (like the clicker thing last year). I feel like student gov DID ask our opinions whenever possible....and they got pitifully low response rates.

stop whining and get involved.

I'll agree that the professors do "teach to the APs" so far this semester and that is a major issue that needs to be brought up.

I'm really frustrated with how rude the class is with talking. During the class with the new lecturer in DOD, people couldn't shut up during the last couple minutes while she was trying to wrap up. I understand we didn't get a break but come on. There's constant chatter during a lot of our classes and it's really distracting. If you don't plan on paying attention, just don't come.

agreed. can we have someone go around and ask those people to leave the room?

no word on the meeting, huh?

The Voice of Reason said...

If someone needs to step up, why not you? If you hear people around you talking, tell them to stop or leave the room. If everyone did that, it wouldn't be an issue. All the people like the previous poster who refuse to step up but want someone else to do it are the reason that hasn't been resolved already. Stop passing the buck and pull some weight.
